Shibori Cloth
Students learned about the different art forms in Japan and other areas of Asia. We looked heavily into shibori dyeing which is a resist dye method similar to tie dye. The biggest feature is its indigo color. We discussed the pigments origins and 5 different ways the cloth could be manipulated to create a unique shibori pattern.
Metal Repousse
Students used chasing and engraving methods in metal to manipulate the surface texture. They created either a geometric or organic design in a relief and continued that line into the background with oil pastels. This project combines 3D and 2D, being mixed media.

Contour Shoe Drawing
Color Action Wheel
Students practiced using their knowledge of the color wheel by creating a unique color wheel that incorporates movement. This project emphasizes movement as a principle of design and color as an element of art. Students cut out an image from a magazine and reproduced the shape 12 times. They painted each shape a color of the wheel and practiced mixing the secondary and tertiary colors. When shapes dried, they glued each piece to new paper, overlapping to create the flow of movement and in the order of the wheel.

Clay Looms for Radial Weave
Students learned the nature of the clay body and how to properly knead clay and create a slab of uniform thickness. We looked at other student examples and talked about organic shapes as inspiration for the design. Students punched an odd number of holes to be used later for their warp threads in their radial weaves. We discussed proper glaze application and the different types of firing. All in all the looks turned out well. Due to technical difficulties and fragile bisqueware, students learned the unfortunate lesson that sometimes art has challenges along the way and it's okay to be patient and try to fix things. While some students didn't get to start weaving due to broken pieces, they still learned a great deal about the process and skill or ceramic work.
Cubist superhero/Cartoon
Students used the Cubist techniques of rearranging, geometric simplified shapes, multiple views, broken mirror effect, and abstraction to make an adaptation of their favorite superhero or cartoon. We discussed how Cubism started mainly from Pablo Picasso, and that is was a way to depict objects in a way that was not realistic or non-objective. We briefly discussed Picasso's earlier life, where he produced work in the Blue Period and Rose Period.
Op Art drawings
Students chose between two different styles of Op Art for this assignment. We looked at artist Bridget Riley and her works of illusion. We made an optical illusion with our hand and completed a practice worksheet. Students used a variety of color and incorporated value to create their illusion.
Cropped Oil Pastel
Students chose an image to crop or zoom into a close-up. Their image had to showcase an interesting or unique texture that could be captured using oil pastel techniques. We demoed how to use oil pastel and practiced blending, scumbling, sgraffito, layering, hatching, and smoothing oil pastel with baby oil. Most chose to pick an animal eye, however it was open to other options.
